There are many beautiful places to visit within an hour of the Centre, including the Brecon Beacons, Castles, Waterfalls, the beautiful coastline of the Gower peninsula plus two lovely local walks from the Centre itself.

The highest falls in South Wales, this waterfall is a must see, as much for the lovely woodland walk down to it as for the delicate curtain which is Henrydd falls itself, sited at a geological fault which has created a deep gorge and bay, where in dry weather it is possible to walk behind the falls and swim in the pool! Dippers are common on the river, which has lovely ferns and mosses on its banks. Maintained by National Trust. There is a Free car park and entry, and only ten minutes from Centre.

Craig-y-Nos Country Park

The castle built by Adele Patti, an Italian opera singer some 100 yrs ago now hosts weddings and conferences and a museum. It also has lovely grounds in which various activities take place throughout the year. Fifteen minutes from the Centre.

Brecon Beacons National Park

With stunning scenery all year round & just a ten minute drive north of The Phoenix Retreat, the National Park is well worth exploring. Red Kites are now a common site in the skies and there are many places to stop and enjoy the fantastic views and to go for walks. The Mountain Centre at Libanus has a shop & restaurant with views of the largest mountains.

Swansea and Gower beaches are amongst the cleanest and most beautiful in the country. The Gower peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beaches are fifty minutes to one & a half hours from the Centre.

There are a number of ruined and standing castles in South Wales within an hour of the Centre:

Local Walks

There is a lovely walk up to the Sleeping Giant, a hill shaped like a man sleeping on his back,  from a footpath just to the rear of the centre, and a riverside walk just 10 minutes from the centre.  The Sleeping Giant Foundation web site has more information.

Waterfall Walks from Ystradfellte
Along the Mellte, Hepste, and Neath rivers, near the tiny village of Ystradfellte in south-central Wales.  For more information on this exciting walk visit the Natural Highs web site which also contains details on a range of walks from Ystadfellte to various waterfalls in this valley,  Ystradfellte is some 15 minutes from Abercraf.

These award winning caves won a recent BBC competition for the best attraction in the UK. Apart from the stunning miles of caves themselves, there is also a dinasour park, iron age village, farm and museum. All just 10 minutes from the Centre.

Karting Nation
The fantastic new centre boasts state of the art computer lap timing systems and all modern amenities including a trackside cafe and corporate facilities in what will be Wales premier indoor karting facility. The track is 450m long and is made up of an exciting network of straights and high-speed corners as well as a huge bridge and double underpass adding to the racing experience.

For a family day out with a difference, Taff Valley Activity Centre offers an exciting new way to see the countryside.
